I love the idea that these gold records are onboard the Voyager 1 and 2 crafts sailing out into deep space.

The first is a record containing sounds of Earth including humans speaking in different languages, bird song and music from different cultures. When Carl Sagan was asked if they should put a recording of Bach on it, he replied “That would just be showing off.”

The second is a pictorial instruction of how to play the record. It is meant to be interpretable to any intelligent life-form that may come across it in the far future. So if you can’t work out the instructions, I guess that means you’re not intelligent… Awkward…

He was one of the most important developers of rockets during WW II and led the development of the V–2 ballistic missile for the Nazis, which travelled at 3,000 miles an hour and caused havoc on areas of London.  After WWII he was employed to use his knowledge to produce rockets for the U.S. Army, and was transferred to the newly formed ‘NASA’ in 1960, becoming director of Marshall Space Flight Center and chief architect of the ‘Saturn V’ launch vehicle used to put men on the moon.
